1. Partial Government Shutdown

The U.S. federal government has been partially shut down since October 1, 2025, after Congress failed to pass the necessary budget funding bill.

Around 900,000 federal employees have been furloughed, and about 700,000 more are working without pay.

Essential services like Medicare, Medicaid, and air traffic control continue to operate, but many agencies have halted their activities.

The shutdown has also disrupted the publication of key economic and statistical data.

2. National Guard Deployment and Law Enforcement Actions

The U.S. government has deployed the National Guard to Chicago and several other cities to assist with law enforcement.

Some courts have questioned the legality of such deployments, calling them possible constitutional violations.

The Trump administration says it aims to “restore order” in cities struggling with rising crime.

3. War Declaration Against Drug Cartels

The Trump administration recently announced that Caribbean drug cartels will be treated as “unlawful combatants,” effectively giving the U.S. military authority to act against them.

Venezuela accused the U.S. of provocative military flights near its coast.

4. Israel–Hamas War and U.S. Involvement

The Trump administration proposed a 20-point peace plan to end the Gaza conflict, including prisoner swaps and a new administrative framework for Gaza.

Hamas accepted some parts of the plan but rejected terms related to disarmament.

The U.S. is mediating peace talks in Cairo, Egypt.

5. Political Disputes and Blame Game

Democrats and Republicans are blaming each other for the shutdown.

The Trump administration has warned of large-scale layoffs if the shutdown continues.
